1. Background

The conjectures of Shapiro and Shapiro tie together recent work in real enumerative geometry and a variant of the pole placement problem asking for real feedback laws. Its history is similarly connected. The first substantial evidence for it was found while investigating the pole placement problem numerically [RS].
